Mercedes-Benz Vans LLC Drives Sustainable Manufacturing with Renewable Natural Gas in Charleston

Mercedes-Benz Vans (MBV), under the umbrella of Mercedes-Benz Vans LLC, is reinforcing its commitment to environmental stewardship by pioneering sustainable solutions at its Charleston, South Carolina plant. In a significant step towards reducing its environmental impact, the Charleston facility has become the first Mercedes-Benz AG plant to utilize renewable natural gas (RNG). This initiative marks a crucial advancement in MBV’s global strategy to achieve CO2-neutral production.

The Charleston plant recently celebrated this milestone with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, graced by South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster, highlighting the state’s support for innovative green energy projects. Mercedes-Benz Vans LLC is leveraging RNG across its Charleston operations, powering essential processes such as maintaining optimal building temperatures and humidity. Notably, RNG is integral to the operations of the state-of-the-art Paint Shop, a key component of the plant’s 2018 expansion, where it ensures precise water temperature control critical for paint application. By adopting renewable natural gas, Mercedes-Benz Vans LLC significantly diminishes its reliance on fossil fuels, thereby substantially shrinking its carbon footprint.

The RNG utilized by Mercedes-Benz Vans LLC is sourced locally, converted by GreenGasUSA from methane emissions captured at McCall Farms, a commercial vegetable cannery also located in South Carolina. This local partnership underscores Mercedes-Benz Vans LLC’s dedication to supporting regional sustainability efforts and fostering a circular economy. Employing RNG to power plant operations is a cornerstone of Mercedes-Benz Vans LLC’s broader sustainability journey, emphasizing green production practices and technologies to effectively offset carbon emissions.

“Sustainability is not just an initiative; it’s a core pillar of our plant strategy at MBV Charleston,” stated Axel Bense, President & CEO of Mercedes-Benz Vans, LLC. “We are exceptionally proud to be at the forefront of sustainable van manufacturing, taking concrete steps towards our CO2 neutrality goal. Being the first RNG project in South Carolina and the first Mercedes-Benz AG plant to implement this technology underscores our leadership in this critical area.”

From its inception, the Charleston plant under Mercedes-Benz Vans LLC has prioritized environmentally conscious operations. Looking ahead, MBV is poised to further enhance its sustainability credentials with the production of the next generation eSprinter, slated for release in the latter half of 2023. This all-electric van will be produced CO2 neutral, aligning with Mercedes-Benz Vans’ global commitment to ensure all production plants operate on 100% green energy by 2022. Mercedes-Benz Vans LLC is dedicated to making a positive contribution to the community and future generations through its ongoing sustainability initiatives.
