Born in Hibbing on November 30, 1999, Selena was the beloved daughter of Ryan Makela and Perlita Benz. Her life, though short, was filled with energy, love, and a deep connection to her family and community.

Growing up in the Iron Range, Selena received her early education in a private Catholic school before attending Hibbing schools and earning her GED. She possessed a naturally fun-loving and outgoing personality that drew people to her. Selena was known for her energetic spirit and zest for life, which she expressed through various activities. She enjoyed playing basketball, exploring the outdoors on bike rides, and rollerblading. Her love for the outdoors was evident in how she spent her free time – often being playful with friends and enjoying the company of her brothers. She also cherished moments spent with her sister, indulging in “girly things” and sharing close bonds.

Selena’s beauty was apparent to all, both inside and out, a fact that was even recognized when she won a “most beautiful baby” contest in her early years. Beyond her radiant personality, Selena possessed an artistic and creative soul. She found outlets in drawing, poetry, and expressing herself through writing. Social media became a canvas for her creativity as she shared quotes from her favorite personalities, reflecting her thoughtful and expressive nature.

Family was at the heart of Selena’s life. She adored spending quality time with her parents, siblings, and grandparents. Her love and devotion to her family were central to who she was.

Selena is survived by her loving father, Ryan, and mother, Perlita; her siblings, Cody Benz, Lucky Benz, and Rhyssa Makela; her grandparents, John and Tammie Makela, and Tina Benz; her great-grandparents, Willard Riendeau and Shirley Englestad; and her uncles, Bob, Eddie, Jim, Gary, and David Benz, and Travis Makela, along with numerous cousins. She was preceded in death by her cherished Grandpa Arthur Benz and Uncle Raul Benz, whom she undoubtedly held dear in her heart.

A funeral service to celebrate Selena’s life will be held at the Dougherty Funeral Home on Tuesday, November 30, 2021, at 6:00 PM.
