The Freedom House Freedom in the World 2026 says 54 countries experienced worsening across political rights and civil liberties during 2025. The report further notes 35 countries had improvements. Just 21% globally resides in Free-rated countries, down from 46 percent. Over two decades it reached 46%. Freedom in the World highlights threats and reprisals for political speech produced chill on speech.
