Metagenomics has advanced to enable immediate identification as seen in a case where a critically ill child was saved from a hidden infection using this technique. Recent trends show the genetic technique can identify a wide range of infections with breakthroughs in whole-genome sequencing and COVID-19 identification now applied to uncover elusive infections. Advancements in metagenomics are improving clinical approaches to disease diagnosis.
