Mercedes-Benz promptly responded to a data security incident in June 2021, involving the personal information of fewer than 1,000 customers and interested buyers. This incident, impacting Mercedes Data, stemmed from a vulnerability within a vendor’s cloud storage platform, not a direct breach of Mercedes-Benz systems.
The security issue was brought to light by an external security researcher, triggering an immediate investigation in collaboration with the vendor. The potentially exposed mercedes data originated from customer inputs on dealer and Mercedes-Benz websites collected between January 1, 2014, and June 19, 2017. Mercedes-Benz emphasizes that its internal systems remained secure throughout this period. Currently, there is no indication of malicious misuse of any Mercedes-Benz files related to this incident.
Mercedes-Benz USA (MBUSA) views mercedes data security with utmost seriousness. The vendor has confirmed the issue’s resolution, implementing measures to prevent recurrence. MBUSA is committed to ongoing investigation and diligent handling of this situation.
The compromised mercedes data primarily included self-reported credit scores. A smaller subset also contained sensitive information such as driver’s license numbers, social security numbers, credit card details, and dates of birth. It’s important to note that accessing this information required specialized software and tools, making it inaccessible through standard internet searches.
The initial investigation aimed to evaluate the accessibility of approximately 1.6 million records. While the majority of these records contained basic contact information like names, addresses, emails, phone numbers, and some vehicle purchase details, the critical finding was that less than 1,000 individuals had more sensitive mercedes data exposed.
Mercedes-Benz USA has proactively begun notifying all affected individuals whose additional personal information was involved. As a protective measure, those whose mercedes data included credit card information, driver’s license numbers, or social security numbers are being offered a complimentary 24-month subscription to a credit monitoring service. Furthermore, Mercedes-Benz is coordinating with relevant government agencies regarding this incident.
For any inquiries or concerns related to this event, Mercedes-Benz has established a dedicated contact point. Customers are encouraged to reach out to the Mercedes-Benz Customer Assistance Center at 1-800-367-6372.
