Mercedes-Benz has announced significant upgrades to its popular Vito van, catering to the evolving needs of businesses across Europe. The revamped diesel-powered Mercedes-Benz Vito van is available for order now, with the battery-electric eVito model slated for release this summer. These enhancements span styling, infotainment systems, driver assistance technologies, and an extended range for the eVito, solidifying the Vito’s position as a versatile and forward-thinking commercial vehicle.
These upgrades underscore Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to refining its van lineup, ensuring they remain at the forefront of the commercial vehicle sector. While the European market is the immediate focus for these updated Vito models, a company spokesperson indicated that announcements regarding the 2021 diesel-powered Metris, the U.S. counterpart to the Vito, are expected later in the year. The Metris has already demonstrated strong performance in the US market, with a notable 18% sales increase in 2019, highlighting the demand for Mercedes-Benz vans globally.
The Mercedes-Benz Vito is manufactured in Vitoria, Spain, and also in Fuzhou, China, through a joint venture. Its global appeal is evident, with 530,000 units sold worldwide since its introduction in autumn 2014. Mercedes-Benz emphasizes the Vito’s versatility, noting that a significant 70% are utilized by small to medium-sized commercial enterprises, particularly those operating fleets of up to five vehicles. This demonstrates the Vito’s crucial role in supporting the backbone of numerous economies.
Both the upgraded Mercedes-Benz Vito van and its Metris counterpart share a suite of enhanced standard features designed to improve both driver experience and operational efficiency. These shared upgrades include the smooth and responsive 9G-Tronic automatic transmission, now equipped with gearshift paddles on the steering wheel for enhanced driver control. A user-friendly 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system is also standard, bringing modern connectivity and convenience to the cabin. Safety and practicality are further bolstered by Crosswind Assist, Hill-Start Assist, a rearview camera for safer maneuvering, extended 15,000-mile maintenance intervals to reduce downtime, and tire pressure monitoring for optimal vehicle maintenance.
Options available for the Mercedes-Benz Vito van further expand its functionality and appeal. These include an anti-theft alarm system for enhanced security, Blind Spot Assist and Lane Keeping Assist for safer driving, Active Parking Assist to simplify urban maneuvers, convenient electric sliding doors, and a digital interior mirror.
The new battery-electric eVito variant marks a significant step forward in emission-free commercial transportation. While not currently slated for the U.S. market and weighing in at 7,716 pounds, the eVito sets a new benchmark within its class, prioritizing everyday usability and practicality. Benjamin Kaehler, head of eDrive@Vans at Mercedes-Benz AG, stated that the eVito “underscores our idea of a locally emission-free van” and highlighted its suitability for diverse applications thanks to its rapid charging capabilities and extended range compared to its predecessor. The eVito can charge from 10% to 80% in under 45 minutes at rapid charging stations and boasts a 90-kilowatt-hour battery providing a range of 262 miles. The strategic placement of the lithium-ion battery in the vehicle’s underbody also contributes to improved handling dynamics. With these comprehensive upgrades, the Mercedes-Benz Vito van continues to be a leading choice for businesses seeking a reliable, versatile, and increasingly sustainable commercial vehicle solution.
