Mercedes-Benz Sprinter All-Wheel Drive: Power and Performance Redefined for 2023

Mercedes-Benz Vans has announced exciting upgrades to its Sprinter lineup for the U.S. market, headlined by a brand-new all-wheel drive (AWD) system and a streamlined selection of efficient 4-cylinder engines. Unveiled at the 2022 Work Truck Week, these enhancements promise to elevate the Sprinter’s performance, capability, and driver experience in the coming model year.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter marks a significant shift towards enhanced efficiency with its exclusive 4-cylinder engine portfolio for both gasoline and diesel variants. Leading this engine revolution is the state-of-the-art OM654 diesel engine. This advanced powerplant is engineered to deliver a smoother, more responsive driving experience, boasting increased torque, reduced emissions, and minimized noise and vibration. The OM654 will be available in two performance levels – 125kW (168 hp) and 155kW (208 hp) – ensuring ample power for a wide range of demanding applications, and representing a notable step up from its predecessors. Key technological advancements contributing to its superior performance include an aluminum block paired with steel pistons, the innovative stepped recess combustion process, and NANOSLIDE® cylinder coating which minimizes in-engine friction. Furthermore, the dynamic multi-way exhaust gas recirculation system and near-engine exhaust gas aftertreatment contribute to both reduced fuel consumption and cleaner emissions, with the strategic positioning of the exhaust gas aftertreatment minimizing heat loss and maximizing operational efficiency.

Complementing the new engine family is the introduction of the 9G-TRONIC 9-speed transmission, now standard across all Sprinter models. This advanced transmission system provides a tangible improvement in driving dynamics, offering enhanced driving comfort, improved fuel economy, and quieter operation. The 9G-TRONIC also contributes to lower emissions thanks to its optimized gear ratios and facilitates quicker downshifts, resulting in more responsive acceleration. Compared to the previous 7G-TRONIC transmission, the 9G-TRONIC features a wider overall gear ratio spread and a higher first gear ratio, translating to quicker starts and enhanced overall performance and adaptability in diverse driving conditions.

The most significant upgrade for many will be the all-new all-wheel-drive (AWD) system in the 2023 Sprinter, replacing the previous 4×4 system. This sophisticated AWD system offers a more refined and capable driving experience, providing enhanced power delivery, improved endurance, and a seamless transition between drive modes. Unlike the previous part-time 4×4 system, which engaged with a fixed 35:65 front-to-rear torque split, the new Sprinter AWD features automatic torque on demand, distributing up to 50% of the torque to each axle as needed. This intelligent system ensures optimal traction and stability across varied terrains, inspiring confidence in challenging driving situations. Crucially, the new AWD system maintains the Sprinter’s established off-road prowess, preserving ground clearance, approach angle, departure angle, and breakover angle, ensuring that customers continue to enjoy the high levels of capability and quality synonymous with Mercedes-Benz Vans.

With these comprehensive updates, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter reinforces its position as a leader in the commercial vehicle segment. The streamlined model packaging and enhanced features cater to a broad spectrum of users, from everyday drivers and delivery services to construction professionals and specialized upfit applications. The 2023 Sprinter is engineered to deliver the comfort, power, and all-terrain capabilities necessary to tackle any task, solidifying its reputation as the ultimate versatile van for businesses and individuals alike.
