Mercedes-Benz has achieved a groundbreaking milestone, becoming the first automaker to receive state approval in the United States for a conditionally automated driving system, SAE Level 3. This landmark achievement signifies a major leap forward in self-driving car technology and positions Mercedes-Benz at the forefront of automotive innovation. The production-ready version of their cutting-edge system, DRIVE PILOT, is set to debut on US roads in California and Nevada in late 2023, initially in a limited fleet of Level 3-equipped EQS Sedans. This will be followed by broader customer availability in early 2024 with MY2024 EQS Sedan and S-Class models through authorized Mercedes-Benz dealerships in these states.
As the first automotive manufacturer globally to introduce a Level 3 system in a standard production vehicle for US customers, Mercedes-Benz is once again raising the bar for advancements in automated driving. California and Nevada have taken the lead as the first states to approve and certify the system for use on major freeways. While regulatory frameworks are still developing across different states, Mercedes-Benz has expressed its intention to expand the availability of this revolutionary technology to additional US markets in the future, bringing the promise of Mercedes Benz Self Driving Car closer to more drivers.
