Mercedes-Benz of Charleston, South Carolina Leads the Charge in Sustainable Manufacturing

Mercedes-Benz Vans (MBV) in Charleston, South Carolina, is setting a new benchmark in environmentally conscious automotive production. The Mercedes-Benz of Charleston plant has proudly announced its pioneering role as the first renewable natural gas (RNG) project site in South Carolina, marking a significant step in the company’s global commitment to sustainability. This initiative underscores Mercedes-Benz’s dedication to enriching lives and safeguarding the environment through innovative and sustainable solutions.

The Charleston plant recently hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony, graced by South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster, to commemorate this groundbreaking RNG project. Mercedes-Benz Vans utilizes RNG throughout its Charleston facility to power critical operations. This includes maintaining optimal building temperatures and humidity, essential for the sophisticated processes within its Paint Shop, which was expanded in 2018. The precise temperature control of water using RNG is vital for the effectiveness of paint application and finishing. By adopting renewable natural gas, Mercedes-Benz of Charleston is significantly reducing its environmental impact and decreasing reliance on traditional fossil fuels.

The renewable natural gas is sourced from GreenGasUSA, who converts methane emissions from McCall Farms, a commercial vegetable cannery located in Effingham, South Carolina. This resourceful application of RNG to power plant equipment with renewable energy is a crucial advancement in Mercedes-Benz Vans’ sustainability journey. It demonstrates a practical commitment to employing green production practices and technologies to effectively offset carbon emissions at the Mercedes-Benz of Charleston facility.

“At MBV Charleston, sustainability is not just an initiative; it’s a core pillar of our plant strategy,” stated Axel Bense, President & CEO of Mercedes-Benz Vans, LLC. “We are immensely proud to be at the forefront of sustainable van production, striving towards our ambitious goal of becoming CO2 neutral. Being the first RNG project in South Carolina, and the first Mercedes-Benz AG plant to utilize RNG, is a testament to our commitment and innovation.”

Since its inception, the Mercedes-Benz of Charleston plant has prioritized environmental stewardship. Looking ahead, MBV is poised to further enhance its sustainability efforts by producing the next generation eSprinter in Charleston, targeted for the second half of 2023, with a CO2 neutral production process. Furthermore, Mercedes-Benz Vans is committed to ensuring all its production plants worldwide are powered by 100% green energy by the end of 2022. This holistic approach reflects Mercedes-Benz’s ongoing dedication to making a positive contribution to the Charleston community, the broader environment, and future generations through its Mercedes-Benz of Charleston, South Carolina operations.
