Mercedes-Benz Expands U.S. Production with R-Class Manufacturing in Mishawaka, Indiana

In a significant move to bolster its U.S. production capacity and meet the escalating demand for its Sport Utility Vehicles, Mercedes-Benz U.S. International, Inc. has announced a strategic partnership with AM General LLC. This collaboration will see the production of the Mercedes-Benz R-Class luxury vehicle shift to AM General’s state-of-the-art Commercial Assembly Plant located in Mishawaka, Indiana. This marks a pivotal moment for both companies and for the automotive industry in Mishawaka, Indiana, highlighting the region’s growing importance in vehicle manufacturing.

Driven by the increasing popularity of its SUV models, Mercedes-Benz requires enhanced production capabilities within the United States. To accommodate this surge, the decision was made to relocate R-Class production from its existing Tuscaloosa, Alabama plant to the expansive facility in Mishawaka. This strategic realignment allows Mercedes-Benz to optimize its Tuscaloosa plant for SUV production while entrusting the manufacturing of the R-Class to a capable partner in AM General.

The multi-year agreement establishes AM General as Mercedes-Benz’s first and only contract manufacturing operator within the U.S. This partnership underscores Mercedes-Benz’s confidence in AM General’s manufacturing expertise and the skilled workforce in Mishawaka, Indiana. Preparations are already underway at AM General’s Commercial Assembly Plant, with R-Class vehicles expected to begin production this summer. This operation will generate hundreds of new jobs in the Mishawaka area, providing a significant boost to the local economy and demonstrating AM General’s commitment to the region.

Charlie Hall, President and CEO of AM General, expressed enthusiasm about the new venture. “AM General is delighted to be selected by Mercedes-Benz to manufacture the R-Class at our world-class commercial vehicle facility in Mishawaka,” Hall stated. “We anticipate a strong, long-term relationship with Mercedes-Benz and are eager to expand our services within the U.S. and the global automotive sector.”

AM General’s Commercial Assembly Plant is a comprehensive manufacturing and support center, equipped with advanced robotic technology for welding, painting, and assembly. Coupled with a lean manufacturing approach and a highly skilled workforce, the Mishawaka plant is well-positioned to meet the stringent quality and production demands of Mercedes-Benz. This new partnership further solidifies AM General’s expanding role and commitment to Mishawaka, South Bend, and the state of Indiana.

Hall further emphasized the positive impact on the local community, stating, “This agreement exemplifies AM General’s deep and growing dedication to Mishawaka, South Bend, the State of Indiana, and our hardworking, highly skilled employees.”

AM General brings extensive experience to this collaboration, possessing a strong background as both an automotive Contract Assembler and Original Equipment Manufacturer. The company has a proven track record in contract assembly initiatives for major automotive players like General Motors and other Original Equipment Manufacturers.
