Berlin – A landmark in Berlin’s vibrant entertainment scene, the Mercedes-Benz Arena celebrated its 15th anniversary on September 10, 2023. Since its grand opening on September 10, 2008, this premier venue, operated by Anschutz Entertainment Group Operations GmbH, has hosted an astounding 1,992 events, drawing in over 18.1 million visitors. Over the past fifteen years, the Mercedes-Benz Arena has become synonymous with unforgettable moments, showcasing a diverse array of national and international music icons, spectacular shows, and world-class sporting competitions.
Ole Hertel, Vice President and Managing Director of Anschutz Entertainment Group Operations GmbH, reflected on this significant milestone: “Fifteen years of Mercedes-Benz Arena signifies fifteen years filled with incredible highlights and memories that will last a lifetime. The Mercedes-Benz Arena’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges. Like venues worldwide, it faced significant operational disruptions during the pandemic, with public events largely suspended for over two years. However, the lifting of restrictions unleashed a surge in pent-up demand, resulting in an unprecedentedly busy period. In the twelve months spanning from July 2022 to June 2023 alone, the Mercedes-Benz Arena hosted an impressive 192 events, marking its most intensive phase in its 15-year history.
Looking back to its spectacular opening weekend, the Mercedes-Benz Arena Berlin immediately set a high standard. The inaugural events featured legendary performances by Metallica (September 12), German music icon Herbert Grönemeyer (September 13), and British rock band Coldplay (September 15). Adding to the celebratory atmosphere, local ice hockey team Eisbären Berlin secured a resounding 11-0 victory in their home debut on September 14. This dynamic opening weekend not only launched the Mercedes-Benz Arena but also foreshadowed its future as a leading global entertainment destination in Berlin.
