Mercedes 560 AMG: The Underrated Apex of the R107 SL Era

It’s somewhat paradoxical that the Mercedes-Benz SL, a car with a lineage deeply intertwined with motorsport victories, debuted in its R107 generation as a rather refined and understated grand tourer. However, over its impressive eighteen-year production run, spanning from 1971 to 1989 and seeing over 237,000 units manufactured (with a significant 62% destined for the American market), the R107 SL evolved into progressively more potent iterations. This culminated in the introduction of the Mercedes 560 Amg, a V8-powered beast boasting 227 horsepower. Exclusively crafted for North American, Japanese, and Australian markets, the 560 AMG faced stricter emissions regulations, ironically resulting in slightly less power compared to the European market’s 500 SL model.

Subtle AMG Enhancements

Before Mercedes-Benz fully acquired AMG in 1991, the Affalterbach-based tuning house operated in a semi-official capacity. During this era, AMG offered a comprehensive catalog of both aesthetic and performance upgrades for a wide range of Mercedes-Benz models, including the SL. These enhancements were available upon customer request and gained immense popularity throughout the 1980s – a decade synonymous with automotive tuning culture, much like bold fashion statements and iconic pop music. This was a time when automotive individuality and personalization were highly sought after, and subtlety was not always the objective.

The Pinnacle of R107 Performance

For the discerning enthusiast who prioritized exhilarating driving dynamics over ostentatious displays, an AMG-enhanced Mercedes-Benz was the quintessential choice. This brings us to the exceptional vehicle showcased here – arguably the ultimate expression of the Mercedes-Benz R107 SL.

While its outward appearance may not be drastically different from a standard SL, closer inspection reveals subtle yet significant AMG performance indicators. Notably, the ‘6.0’ badge and the iconic AMG Monoblock wheels, wrapped in wide, low-profile tires, hint at the enhanced capabilities beneath the surface. The blue monochromatic color scheme is a refreshing departure from the more common black or grey AMG palettes, adding a touch of tasteful sophistication. This particular shade is both elegant and versatile, while the generous chrome accents further accentuate the car’s inherently refined styling.

Endorsed by a Formula 1 Legend

The true brilliance of this Mercedes 560 AMG lies beneath its hood. It is rumored to be one of a mere three examples equipped with AMG’s formidable M117 6.0-liter V8 engine, generating a substantial output exceeding 330 horsepower. To effectively manage this increased power, a limited-slip differential was incorporated at the rear axle. The overall performance package was undeniably impressive, so much so that, according to its current vendor in Monaco, DG, the legendary Michael Schumacher is documented as a previous owner in the car’s historical records.

A Roar of Performance and Refinement

In recent years, this exceptional Mercedes 560 AMG underwent a comprehensive restoration meticulously executed by Panagiotis Avramidis, a former AMG engineer who later played a key role in reviving the engine tuning specialist MKB Power. Enhancing practicality, a rear bench seat, upholstered in sumptuous navy leather matching the exterior bodywork, was added to the interior. Additionally, a later E55 airbag-equipped steering wheel was installed for improved safety.

The fact that AMG-modified Mercedes-Benz vehicles were often perceived as distinct models in their own right is a testament to AMG’s unparalleled engineering expertise and craftsmanship. Looking at the AMG brand today, its core principles remain fundamentally unchanged. This Mercedes 560 AMG SL stands as both one of the earliest and rarest examples of a pre-merger, AMG-tuned Mercedes-Benz, and undeniably the ultimate iteration of the 1980s R107 SL. While its ‘sensible dream car’ status may have evolved, it remains an exceptional sports car ideal for daily driving. Even after a demanding day, the Mercedes 560 AMG offers an escape, promising to transform any commute into an exhilarating and mood-lifting experience.
