My Beloved 1986 Mercedes 500 SEC: A Journey with Stella

Like many car enthusiasts, I’ve always believed that cars have personalities, and it’s perfectly natural to give them names. Meet Stella, my cherished 1986 Mercedes 500 SEC. I acquired her just over two years ago, and she’s been more than just a car; she’s a project and a passion. While she may not appeal to the Mercedes purist due to some tasteful modifications, I believe they enhance her character, steering clear of any “boy racer” or ostentatious vibe.

Stella is finished in the captivating Alfa/Ferrari color, Canna di Fucile, which beautifully complements her original Palamino interior. She’s fitted with a period-correct Zender body kit that adds a touch of sporty aggression. Initially, she rode on 16-inch Borbet wheels, but I recently upgraded to 17-inch OZ AMG replicas. Original AMG wheels are on my wish list, a goal that requires a bit more saving!

Maintaining a classic like a 1986 Mercedes 500 SEC requires dedication, and Stella receives regular servicing and preventative care. Oil changes are performed roughly every 6,000 miles, or even sooner if I’m undertaking other engine-related tasks. This proactive approach has paid off immensely; Stella has been remarkably reliable. Aside from a minor rear window mechanism issue, she’s been faultless. Crucially, I addressed the common C126 issue of rear deck water ingress, ensuring the rear screen is properly sealed to prevent rot.

Last year, I invested in a stainless steel exhaust system, and the improvement to the driving experience has been transformative. The deep burble of the lazy V8 engine around town is addictive, and the powerful roar on open country roads is truly exhilarating. It’s a sound that perfectly matches the presence of the Mercedes 500 1986.

This week, Stella is booked in for some cosmetic enhancements. The front end is getting a respray to eliminate stone chips on the bumper, and we’re tackling the very early signs of rust on the front wheel arches. Following this, she’s scheduled for a significant upgrade: the installation of a W140 sunroof, along with a luxurious new leather and Alcantara headlining. These improvements will not only enhance her aesthetics but also modernize her features subtly.

With these upcoming refinements, Stella will be very close to my vision of perfection for a 1986 Mercedes 500 SEC. My journey with her, both before and after purchasing her, has been a steep learning curve. I’ve immersed myself in reading and research about this specific model, the W126 coupe, gaining valuable knowledge along the way.

If you have any questions about the Mercedes 500 1986 or my experiences with Stella, please feel free to ask. I’m always happy to share my passion for this classic Mercedes coupe.
