Celebrating 15 Years of World-Class Entertainment at Berlin Arena Mercedes Benz

For fifteen years, the venue now known as the Mercedes-Benz Arena Berlin has stood as a beacon of entertainment in Germany’s capital. On September 10, 2008, this state-of-the-art arena officially opened its doors, and since then, operated by Anschutz Entertainment Group Operations GmbH, it has hosted a staggering 1,992 events, welcoming over 18.1 million visitors. From global music icons to breathtaking spectacles and major international sporting competitions, the Berlin Arena Mercedes Benz has become synonymous with unforgettable live experiences.

Ole Hertel, Vice President and Managing Director of Anschutz Entertainment Group Operations GmbH, reflects on this significant milestone: “Fifteen years of Mercedes-Benz Arena means fifteen years filled with incredible highlights and moments that will last a lifetime. We extend our sincere gratitude to all the talented artists who have graced our stage, the dedicated concert promoters, our valued partners, the passionate sports teams, the essential service providers, and, of course, our incredible employees. Their collective efforts have been the cornerstone of the Arena’s ongoing success story. It’s clear that a dynamic, cosmopolitan city like Berlin needs a top-tier event venue of this scale and caliber to thrive.”

Hertel continues with an optimistic outlook, “We remain dedicated to providing the perfect stage for world-class entertainment for many years to come. The past year has demonstrated the strong desire people have for unique, shared live experiences. Despite current and future challenges, we are excited and optimistic about the next 15 years of the Berlin Arena Mercedes Benz.”

The Mercedes-Benz Arena’s journey hasn’t been without its pauses. Like venues worldwide, it experienced a period of reduced activity during the pandemic. However, the lifting of restrictions unleashed a surge in pent-up demand for live events, resulting in an exceptionally busy period. In the twelve months spanning from July 2022 to June 2023, the Berlin Arena Mercedes Benz hosted an impressive 192 events, marking one of its most intensive phases in its 15-year history.

Looking back to the grand opening 15 years ago, the inaugural weekend set the standard for the venue’s future. Rock legends Metallica (September 12), German music icon Herbert Grönemeyer (September 13), and British superstars Coldplay (September 15) headlined the opening concerts. Adding to the celebratory atmosphere, local ice hockey team Eisbären Berlin secured a resounding 11-0 victory in their home debut on September 14. This spectacular opening weekend perfectly foreshadowed the incredible entertainment and sporting moments that the Berlin Arena Mercedes Benz would deliver over the next decade and a half.
