Mercedes-Benz is gearing up to launch the third generation of its CLA, and anticipation is building, especially around its fresh design. As the release date approaches, Mercedes has offered glimpses of the new CLA, showcasing what enthusiasts can expect in terms of aesthetics and technology. Recently, a video featuring CEO Ola Källenius driving the upcoming CLA at the Immendingen test facility provided some exciting insights, particularly highlighting the distinctive star-shaped headlights.
One of the most talked-about design elements, initially showcased in the Concept CLA, is now confirmed for production: the striking three-pointed star headlights and taillights. Despite initial skepticism about these bold features making it to the final version, Mercedes has proven doubters wrong. As revealed in the recent video, the CLA’s headlights prominently feature an LED cluster shaped like the Mercedes-Benz logo. While images and videos offer a preview, it’s understood that the taillights will mirror this star design, extending this unique lighting signature to the rear of the vehicle. Importantly, these star lights aren’t exclusive to the electric variant, promising a consistent design language across the CLA range.
The new CLA rides on Mercedes’ MMA platform, designed with electric vehicles in mind first. This electric-first approach influences not just the powertrain but also the overall design and proportions of the car. Both the electric and plug-in hybrid versions of the CLA are expected to share a largely similar appearance. Design cues from the concept are clearly visible in the test models, including a sleek roofline and stylish frameless doors, contributing to a modern and dynamic silhouette. While camouflaged in the provided images, the underlying shape and stance of the new CLA hint at a sophisticated and sporty aesthetic.
Källenius himself, despite being a self-proclaimed “petrolhead,” expressed a preference for the electric CLA during the test drive, praising its smooth and quiet operation and impressive handling. The electric powertrain, derived from technology seen in the record-breaking EQXX prototype, emphasizes efficiency and performance. The inclusion of a two-speed transmission further optimizes the electric motor’s output across various driving speeds. An AMG version of the electric CLA is also confirmed, promising an even more performance-oriented design and driving experience.
Beyond the exterior, the interior of the new CLA is set to impress with a completely new, in-house developed software stack and infotainment system called MB OS. This system boasts an advanced AI voice assistant and a comprehensive suite of features. Notably, the CLA will be the first production Mercedes to feature a pillar-to-pillar screen, a design element previously seen in the concept, creating a futuristic and immersive cockpit experience. Even details like the power seat controls have been redesigned, reflecting a comprehensive update throughout the vehicle.
Charging is another key aspect of the new electric CLA, with Mercedes emphasizing a “high-powered charging system” for incredibly fast charging times, aiming to make it feel “almost like fueling” a traditional car. The Concept CLA previously indicated the potential to add 250 miles of range in just 15 minutes and achieve a total range exceeding 450 miles (European cycle). The production model is expected to deliver similar impressive figures, addressing a crucial aspect for EV adoption.
The official debut of the new Mercedes-Benz CLA is anticipated in 2025, with many speculating a reveal at CES in January. As the launch date nears, more details about the design, technology, and performance are expected to emerge, solidifying the CLA’s position in the compact luxury segment. The initial glimpses suggest a vehicle that is not only technologically advanced but also visually striking, particularly with its signature star-shaped lighting and sleek overall design.
