Interior Design: Model-Specific Details Emphasizing Sportiness
The interior design of the new AMG E43 reinforces its dynamic capabilities with numerous unique details. Sport seats provide enhanced lateral support for both the driver and front passenger, crucial during spirited driving. The upholstery, available in MB-Tex/DINAMICA or optional nappa leather, features a distinctive pattern with red topstitching. Complementing the seat design, the door center panels and dashboard are also finished in MB-Tex with red topstitching. Exclusive pedals, a black headliner, and red seat belts further accentuate the sporty ambiance.
The multifunction sports steering wheel, wrapped in black nappa leather with red contrasting topstitching, a flattened bottom section, and Touch Control buttons, is ideally suited for performance driving. The AMG instrument cluster is designed for dynamic driving, presenting essential information clearly on an available fully digital, high-resolution 12.3-inch instrument screen.
AMG 3.0-Liter V6 Biturbo Engine: High Power, Efficient Consumption
The V6 Biturbo engine powering the Mercedes-AMG E43 is engineered to deliver high power output while maintaining optimized fuel consumption and emissions. The impressive 396 horsepower output is achieved through enhancements including new, larger turbochargers and an increased charge-air pressure of 16 psi. Positioned close to the engine, the twin turbochargers ensure rapid power delivery and minimal turbo lag.
The cylinder liners feature NANOSLIDE® coating, a technology refined in Mercedes-Benz’s Formula 1 V6 hybrid turbo engines. This exceptionally durable and wear-resistant coating minimizes friction, contributing to improved engine efficiency. Similarly, the spray-guided fuel injection system, operating at pressures up to 2900 psi, enhances combustion efficiency. A red aluminum insert in the engine cover visually distinguishes the AMG powerplant.
9G-TRONIC Transmission: Rapid Shifts and High Efficiency
The 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission is specifically tuned to meet the performance demands of the new AMG E43. Its multiple downshift capability allows for quick bursts of acceleration, while the double-declutching function in “Sport” and “Sport Plus” modes intensifies the driving experience. Defined ignition intervention technology facilitates even faster gear shifts compared to “Eco” and “Comfort” modes.
A dedicated button on the center console enables selection of “Manual” mode. In this mode, gear changes are dictated by the chosen transmission mode, and drivers can manually shift gears using the steering wheel paddles. Furthermore, the transmission holds the selected gear and will not automatically upshift when the engine reaches its rev limit.
AMG AIRMATIC Adaptive Sport Suspension: Enhanced Agility
To achieve increased agility, more neutral handling in corners, and enhanced traction at high speeds, AMG engineers in Affalterbach developed a unique sports suspension based on the AIR BODY CONTROL multi-chamber air suspension system. The Adaptive Damping System offers three selectable modes: “Comfort,” “Sport,” and “Sport Plus.” This system provides a broad spectrum, ranging from a comfortable ride for long journeys to dynamic handling for spirited driving.
The four-link front axle incorporates special steering knuckles and load-bearing joints, with all components optimized for rigidity. Increased negative camber on both the front and multi-link rear axles improves lateral dynamics. The elastokinematics of both axles are designed to be generally stiffer, contributing to enhanced agility and driving dynamics.
AMG Performance 4MATIC: Rear-Biased and Agile All-Wheel Drive
The AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel drive system is characterized by its rear-biased torque distribution, splitting torque between the front and rear axles at a ratio of 31:69 percent. This configuration enhances driving dynamics and lateral acceleration, while also improving traction during acceleration.
In combining the permanent all-wheel drive with the 9G-TRONIC transmission, engineers opted for a new design approach: the single-stage transfer case of the all-wheel drive is flange-mounted to the 9G-TRONIC as a separate system. This new add-on solution allows for easier adjustment of torque distribution based on the specific model, enabling more individualized characteristics for different model series. The new system also offers improved efficiency, reduced friction, and lower weight compared to previous integrated designs. Its compact form factor does not compromise passenger or luggage space.
AMG DYNAMIC SELECT: Tailoring Driving Characteristics
The AMG DYNAMIC SELECT system offers five transmission modes – “Eco,” “Comfort,” “Sport,” “Sport Plus,” and “Individual” – allowing drivers to customize the AMG E43’s characteristics to their preferences. The system adjusts key parameters such as engine response, transmission behavior, suspension settings, and steering feel, ranging from efficient and comfortable to intensely sporty.
Regardless of the selected AMG DYNAMIC SELECT mode, drivers can engage “Manual” mode by pressing the “M” button, enabling gear changes exclusively via the steering wheel shift paddles. Suspension settings can also be adjusted independently as needed.
The “Sport” and “Sport Plus” modes of AMG DYNAMIC SELECT are specifically configured for dynamic driving in the new AMG E43. These modes provide an agile accelerator pedal response with a direct setup and emotionally engaging gear shifts with reduced shift times and double-declutching. An increased idle speed further enhances quick starts and provides faster acceleration from a standstill.
For enhanced fuel efficiency, “Eco” mode utilizes the ECO start/stop function and a gliding function. When the driver releases the accelerator between 31 and 99 mph, the clutch disengages, decoupling the engine from the powertrain. The electronics reduce the engine speed to idle, and driving resistance is minimized by reducing compression and frictional forces during engine overrun.
Speed-Sensitive Sports Steering: Direct Feedback and Precision
The speed-sensitive sports steering in the AMG E43 features a variable ratio, providing precise and authentic feedback. Steering power assistance is selectable in two modes: “Comfort” and “Sport.” The appropriate characteristics are automatically activated based on the selected AMG DYNAMIC SELECT mode or can be customized in Individual mode. “Sport” mode increases manual torque, providing enhanced feedback on driving conditions. The large braking system, equipped with internally ventilated compound brake discs, ensures reliable and rapid deceleration for the sedan.
Optional Sporty Features
Optional features further emphasize the sporty character of the AMG E43, including AMG seats with enhanced lateral support, nappa leather upholstery, and 20-inch wheels, allowing for further personalization and performance enhancements.
The Mercedes-AMG E43 made its global debut at the New York International Auto Show in March 2016 and was available in US dealerships by early 2017, marking a significant addition to the Mercedes-AMG lineup.
