Selena Grace Benz-Makela, a vibrant soul from Hibbing, MN, passed away on November 21, 2021, at the young age of 21. Born in Hibbing on November 30, 1999, Selena was the beloved daughter of Ryan Makela and Perlita Benz. Her life, though brief, was filled with energy, creativity, and deep connections with family and friends.
Growing up in the Iron Range, Selena Benz embraced life with an outgoing and energetic spirit. She attended both private catholic school and Hibbing schools, later earning her GED. Selena had a zest for life that shone through her various interests. She loved playing basketball, enjoying bike rides, and rollerblading. Being outdoors was one of her greatest pleasures, where she would often spend time with friends, sharing laughter and creating joyful memories. These moments of lighthearted fun and friendship were precious to her.
Selena also cherished her bond with her siblings. She enjoyed playful times with her brothers and shared special “girly things” with her sister, like brushing hair – simple moments that strengthened their family ties. From a young age, Selena Benz possessed a captivating beauty, both inside and out, even being recognized as a “most beautiful baby.” This inner and outer beauty defined her throughout her life.
Beyond her energetic and social nature, Selena had a creative and artistic side. She expressed herself through drawing and poetry, finding outlets for her thoughts and feelings in writing. Selena was known for her creative expression on social media, often sharing quotes from her favorite personalities, reflecting her thoughtful and expressive nature. Her artistic endeavors provided a glimpse into her rich inner world.
Family was at the heart of Selena’s life. She adored spending time with her parents, Ryan and Perlita, her siblings Cody Benz, Lucky Benz, and Rhyssa Makela, and her grandparents, John and Tammie Makela, and Tina Benz. She was also close to her great-grandparents, Willard Riendeau and Shirley Englestad, her uncles Bob, Eddie, Jim, Gary, and David Benz, and Travis Makela, along with numerous cousins. Selena was predeceased by her grandfathers, Arthur Benz and Uncle Raul Benz, whom she loved dearly.
A funeral service to celebrate Selena’s life was held at the Dougherty Funeral Home in Hibbing on Tuesday, November 30, 2021. Chris Champion officiated the service, and family and friends gathered to remember Selena and share their condolences. Interment will be held at the Maple Hill Cemetery in Hibbing, where Selena will be laid to rest alongside her grandpa Arthur at a later date. Selena Grace Benz-Makela will be deeply missed by all who knew her, but her vibrant spirit and the love she shared will be remembered forever.
