2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet: A Timeless Blend of Luxury and Open-Top Driving

As a long-time admirer of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, particularly the W212 generation, I approached the 2014 facelift with a mix of anticipation and apprehension. The pre-facelift W212, with its distinct rectangular quad headlights and ponton-style rear fenders, was, in my view and many others’, a benchmark of modern Mercedes-Benz design. The question was: could the updated 2014 model maintain that allure? Thankfully, my worries were unfounded. While the iconic design elements of the original W212 were refined, the 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet emerged as an even more cohesive and undeniably handsome vehicle.

My experience with the E-Class extends beyond just admiration. I’ve spent considerable time behind the wheel of various iterations, including the W211 and W212 E350 sedans, thanks to family connections. More recently, I had the pleasure of experiencing the 2014 refresh in the exhilarating E550 Cabriolet form. The E550, with its twin-turbo V8 unleashing a staggering 440 lb-ft of torque from a mere 1600 rpm, was nothing short of breathtaking. However, this review focuses on the E350 Cabriolet, which, while lacking forced induction, still offers a thoroughly enjoyable driving experience. The 3.5-liter V6 engine delivers power and torque figures that are competitive within its class, accompanied by a satisfying growl when you demand more from the throttle. While the 7-speed automatic transmission might not possess the lightning-fast shifts of some rivals, its relaxed programming perfectly complements the E-Class’s refined character, encouraging a more laid-back and comfortable driving style.

In a market increasingly saturated with vehicles chasing an overtly sporty persona, the 2014 Mercedes-Benz E350 Cabriolet is a refreshing departure. Even with the optional Sport package equipped on this test car, the “sportiness” is tastefully restrained. The package includes attractive 18-inch AMG wheels, drilled pedals, and supportive multi-contour seats, but thankfully avoids any compromise to ride comfort with a harsh suspension or overly aggressive steering settings. This E350 is all the better for it, striking a perfect balance between precise handling and the plush isolation expected of a true luxury car. With the top raised, the cabin is remarkably quiet for a convertible, and with it lowered, drafts are minimal, contributing to a serene open-air experience. The ride quality remains composed and comfortable, with the chassis exhibiting impressive rigidity, free from unwanted scuttle shake or rattles even on less-than-perfect road surfaces.

This sense of serenity extends to the interior of the 2014 E350 Cabriolet. While it may not boast the cutting-edge technological wizardry found in ultra-luxury convertibles, the cabin exudes a sense of quality and craftsmanship that rivals those significantly more expensive vehicles. When compared to competitors like a fully loaded BMW 4-Series convertible, which can easily reach similar price points, the larger E-Class Cabriolet holds its own remarkably well. Mercedes-Benz’s COMAND infotainment system remains a personal favorite in the luxury segment, thanks to its intuitive interface and crisp visuals. It avoids the frustratingly complex submenus found in some competitor systems, presenting all major functions in a logical and easily navigable horizontal layout across the screen. While the column-mounted gear selector might not appeal to everyone, it feels perfectly appropriate in the relaxed character of the E350 Cabriolet. For those moments when manual gear changes are desired, steering wheel-mounted paddles are readily available. The rest of the interior is crafted from premium materials and boasts an elegant design that feels commensurate with our test car’s as-tested price of just under $75,000. For drivers prioritizing a refined and comfortable driving experience over aggressive sportiness, the 2014 Mercedes-Benz E350 Cabriolet is an exceptionally compelling choice.
