Mercedes-Benz unveiled the 2019 A-Class hatchback at an exclusive event in Amsterdam on February 2, 2018, showcasing a complete redesign of their popular Benz Hatchback. This new generation A-Class boasted increased dimensions, translating to a more spacious interior than its predecessors. A key highlight was the introduction of MBUX, Mercedes-Benz’s innovative AI-powered infotainment system, making its debut in this model. Furthermore, the 2019 A-Class incorporated advanced driver assistance systems, including distance assist, emergency stop assist, active lane change assist, and active brake assist, enhancing safety and convenience. While Mercedes-Benz remained silent about the immediate India launch at the time of unveiling, anticipation was high for its arrival later that year.
In the Indian market, the third generation Mercedes-Benz A-Class benz hatchback was already available, positioned as a premium offering with a price range between Rs 29.89 lakh and 30.94 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). Indian customers could choose between two distinct variants: the A180 Sport and the A 200 CDI, catering to different preferences in fuel type and performance.
Under the hood, the India-spec A-Class benz hatchback featured a choice of engines designed for a balance of performance and efficiency. A 2.2-litre diesel engine delivered 136PS of power and 300Nm of torque, while a 1.6-litre petrol engine produced 122PS and 200Nm of torque. Both engines were paired with a smooth and responsive 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. These powertrains ensured the A-Class was well-suited for both city driving and comfortable highway cruising.
The features list of the then-current A-Class benz hatchback in India was comprehensive, emphasizing luxury and technology. It included striking LED headlamps, a panoramic sunroof for an airy cabin feel, an 8-inch infotainment screen complemented by a 20 CD changer, seamless smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Garmin navigation for precise directions, a rear parking camera for enhanced maneuverability, and the convenience of push-button start.
Safety in the A-Class benz hatchback was prioritized with a suite of features. Six airbags provided comprehensive occupant protection, while ABS, attention assist, adaptive braking, Electronic Stability Program, and Acceleration Skid Control worked together to enhance driving safety and prevent accidents.
At that time, the Mercedes-Benz A-Class benz hatchback faced limited competition in India’s luxury hatchback segment. Its primary rival was the Volvo V40, while the BMW 1-Series hatchback, previously a competitor, had been discontinued in 2017, leaving the A-Class to stand out as a prominent benz hatchback option.
