Mercedes Benz GLK 350: A Timeless Compact SUV Review

The automotive world is full of surprises, and sometimes, the most unexpected places can spark our interest in a vehicle. For me, it was a casual mention in a popular TV show that first introduced me to the Mercedes Benz Glk 350. While the circumstances were lighthearted, my experience with this compact SUV proved to be anything but trivial.

Initially, upon seeing the GLK 350, a certain boxiness and resemblance to earlier Subaru Forester models struck me, particularly with the prominent Mercedes star emblem. Coupled with its association with a show that wasn’t exactly on my preferred viewing list, my first impressions of this “baby Benz” were mixed. There was also the matter of specifications – 268 horsepower tasked with moving over two tons of vehicle. For a Mercedes Benz, it seemed, on paper at least, somewhat underwhelming.

However, all initial reservations vanished the moment I got behind the wheel.

The Drive: Where the GLK 350 Truly Shines

The Mercedes Benz GLK 350 is, simply put, a joy to drive. While the brake and steering feedback might be described as somewhat muted, the GLK 350’s performance on the road is undeniable. The brakes, despite a less communicative feel, provide rapid and confident stopping power. The steering, while not brimming with tactile road information, is precise and responsive, allowing for confident maneuvering at various speeds. Point it in a direction, and the GLK 350 obliges with accuracy and composure.

Acceleration is where the GLK 350 truly impresses. Consistently achieving 0 to 60 mph in under 7 seconds demonstrates a level of performance that belies its initial specifications. The 7-speed automatic transmission is a seamless partner, offering smooth shifts in normal driving and quick, responsive kick-downs when needed. While the transmission’s shift logic can be briefly confused by rapid throttle changes in sport mode, for daily driving, its performance is exemplary.

Daily Commuting and Comfort

In “comfort” mode, the Mercedes Benz GLK 350 transforms into an exceptional daily commuter. It surpasses many competitors in its class, including the BMW X3, particularly in highway driving. The seats are supportive and comfortable, the ride is firm yet compliant, and the optional Harman/Kardon LOGIC7® surround sound system is truly outstanding. Featuring 11 speakers, 600 watts of power, and Dolby Digital 5.1, this audio system creates an immersive listening experience. Combined with a panoramic sunroof that adds an open and airy feel to the cabin and a user-friendly navigation system, the GLK 350 becomes a superb companion for both short commutes and longer journeys.

Practicality and Interior Considerations

While front seat occupants will find ample space and comfort, rear seat space in the GLK 350 is more limited. Taller passengers might find legroom tight, especially if the front seats are pushed far back. However, children will find the rear seats comfortable, though the easily accessible window controls might require parental lock activation, as was my experience. Cargo space is also on the smaller side for the compact SUV class. Even with the 60/40 split-folding rear seats lowered, fitting larger items like a mountain bike might require front wheel removal.

Stepping into and out of the GLK 350 is effortless, a boon for those of us with larger frames. The interior layout is generally well-designed and intuitive, with the exception of the cruise control stalk being positioned where one might expect the turn signal stalk – a common Mercedes quirk. Overall, the GLK 350 is a vehicle that is easy to live with and drive daily.

The build quality of the GLK 350 is demonstrably high. The interior design, while restrained, is executed with good taste and quality materials. The hidden release buttons for the center armrest’s split doors are a subtle touch of thoughtful design. Visibility is excellent, thanks to the expansive greenhouse and well-designed sightlines, placing it among the best in its class in this regard.

However, the GLK 350 might be perceived as lacking the quintessential Mercedes Benz “panache” in terms of exterior styling, especially when compared to more recent models or competitors known for striking designs.

4MATIC and All-Weather Capability

Venturing off the beaten path, the Mercedes Benz GLK 350 4MATIC, equipped with all-wheel drive, proved surprisingly capable. Despite the large 19-inch wheels, it handled rough dirt roads and muddy patches with composure. While not equipped with dedicated off-road features or a low-range gear, the 4MATIC system and increased ride height transform the GLK 350 into a confident all-weather vehicle. After testing its capabilities on challenging terrain, it’s clear that the GLK 350 4MATIC would be an excellent choice for navigating snowy or slippery winter conditions.

Pricing and Market Positioning

One of the most appealing aspects of the Mercedes Benz GLK 350 is its surprisingly accessible price point. With a starting price in the low $30,000s when new (and even more attractive on the used market), it offered a compelling entry into the Mercedes Benz brand. Even a well-equipped 4MATIC model could be obtained for around $46,000, and judicious option selection could keep the price closer to the $40,000 mark. This pricing made the GLK 350 a competitive option in the luxury compact SUV segment.

While marketing materials may have initially targeted a female demographic, the Mercedes Benz GLK 350’s appeal is far broader. Its balanced blend of driving dynamics, comfort, and practicality makes it a worthy contender for anyone seeking a spunky and capable compact luxury SUV.

Conclusion: A Solid and Slightly Understated Mercedes

In conclusion, the Mercedes Benz GLK 350 is a genuinely good vehicle, even if it might feel slightly understated for the Mercedes Benz badge it carries. It delivers a rewarding driving experience, offers a comfortable and well-appointed interior, and provides capable all-weather performance with the 4MATIC system. While it may not possess the outright flash of some of its stablemates or competitors, the GLK 350 offers a solid and dependable package that holds its own in the competitive compact luxury SUV market, especially as a value proposition in the used car landscape. If you’re looking for a practical, enjoyable, and capable compact SUV with a touch of German engineering, the Mercedes Benz GLK 350 is certainly worth considering.
