Reigning Champion: 2021 Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S Sets New Nürburgring Record

The 2021 Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S has once again proven its dominance in the luxury performance class, reclaiming the Nürburgring Nordschleife lap record. AMG development engineer Demian Schaffert expertly piloted the four-door coupe around the challenging “Green Hell,” achieving a blistering new official record time. This remarkable feat firmly positions the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S at the top of the official list of fastest luxury vehicles on the legendary track. Outperforming its own previous record from 2018 by an impressive 2.3 seconds, the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S solidified its position as the king of the Nürburgring. The officially validated lap times are 7:23.009 minutes for the 12.8-mile circuit (excluding straight-line measurement at track section T13) and 7:27.800 minutes for the full 12.944-mile track (including straight-line measurement at T13). These times are officially recognized and published by Nürburgring GmbH, underscoring the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S’s unparalleled performance.

The record-breaking 2021 Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S remained in its standard production configuration, showcasing the inherent performance capabilities engineered into this exceptional vehicle. Key features contributing to this achievement include the fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive system, which ensures optimal traction and power distribution in all driving conditions. Active rear-axle steering enhances agility and stability, particularly through the Nürburgring’s demanding corners. An electronically controlled rear-axle limited-slip differential further optimizes handling and cornering prowess. The AMG DYNAMICS agility program allows drivers to fine-tune the vehicle’s dynamics to suit various driving scenarios, maximizing performance on the track. For this record attempt, the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S was equipped with optional Michelin Pilot Sport Cup2 tires, providing superior grip and contributing to the car’s exceptional traction and acceleration out of corners. The optional AMG Aerodynamics Package, also fitted to the record-breaking car, further enhances high-speed stability and reduces aerodynamic drag, crucial for achieving top performance on a track like the Nürburgring.

According to Demian Schaffert, the AMG development engineer and driver behind the record, “Even after years of involvement in the GT 63’s development, it’s consistently impressive to witness the breadth of capability this vehicle possesses. This is especially evident after the recent refinements. The four-door coupe seamlessly blends everyday comfort and intelligent safety systems with an exceptionally high degree of driving dynamics and precision. This duality is what we’ve once again demonstrated so convincingly on the demanding Nordschleife.”

The record attempt faced less than ideal conditions on the notoriously challenging Nürburgring. Sections of the track were damp, and ambient temperatures were a cool 44.6 degrees Fahrenheit, with the asphalt temperature slightly warmer at 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Despite these conditions, Schaffert expertly maximized the performance of the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S. Utilizing the RACE driving program, the AMG RIDE CONTROL+ suspension automatically stiffened damper settings, and the steering response became more direct, optimizing the car for track performance. Engaging the “Master” position within the AMG DYNAMICS agility program further unleashed the full potential of the all-wheel-drive system and the rapid electronic limited-slip differential, ensuring maximum dynamic response and agility. For driver safety during the record attempt, the vehicle was also equipped with a racing bucket seat and four-point seat belts.

The record lap was meticulously timed and validated by independent experts from “wige SOLUTIONS,” utilizing calibrated photoelectric sensor technology. An independent notary public was also present to certify the vehicle’s condition and the officially recorded lap time. Understanding Nürburgring Nordschleife Lap Timing Variations

The Nürburgring Nordschleife is globally recognized as one of the most challenging and demanding racetracks. For Mercedes-AMG, it serves as a critical testing ground for all new vehicle developments. Achieving a lap record on the Nordschleife is considered the ultimate test of a sports car’s capabilities. It’s important to note that lap times are recorded for two slightly different track configurations – 12.8 miles and 12.944 miles.

The 12.8-mile circuit has been the benchmark since 1997. The German automotive publication “sport auto,” part of Motor Presse Stuttgart, uses this configuration for their rigorous “Supertest” evaluations. Historically, this measurement excludes the short straight section at the T13 grandstand, located between the Nordschleife turn-off to the Grand Prix circuit and the Grand Prix circuit exit back onto the Nordschleife. The starting line is positioned at the end of the T13 grandstand (northbound), and the finish line is at the beginning of the T13 grandstand (southbound). Consequently, a complete lap with a flying start is not measured. The total length of this configuration is 12.8 miles.

In 2019, the official Nürburgring lap was introduced. Organized by the Nürburgring operating company, “Nürburgring 1927 GmbH & Co. KG,” this official lap is slightly longer by 761.155 feet. This is because the start and finish lines are identical, both located on the T13 section, resulting in a complete 12.944-mile Nordschleife lap being measured with a flying start.

Stringent criteria ensure the recognition of both record times. Beyond precise timekeeping using calibrated photoelectric sensor technology, official record attempts and lap time trials are always overseen by a notary public. The notary not only monitors the timekeeping process but also inspects and approves the vehicles and tires used. Vehicle class classifications adhere to the official categories defined by the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (“Kraftfahrtbundesamt” KBA).
