2014 Mercedes-Benz E350: A Refined Choice in the Used Luxury Market

As someone deeply appreciative of the Mercedes-Benz W212 E-Class generation, particularly the pre-facelift models, the announcement of the 2014 refresh sparked a bit of initial hesitation. The original W212, with its distinctive rectangular quad headlights and classic “ponton” fender lines, was, and still is, considered by many to be a pinnacle of modern Mercedes-Benz design. The question was: could the facelift enhance, or would it detract from, this already successful formula? Fortunately, any worries were quickly dispelled. The 2014 Mercedes-Benz E350, while evolving in its aesthetics, retains the core appeal of the E-Class, presenting a sophisticated and handsome vehicle that stands the test of time.

Having spent considerable time behind the wheel of various E-Class models, including both the W212 and its predecessor W211 iterations, as well as experiencing the 2014 update in the powerful E550 Cabriolet form, I had a solid basis for comparison. The E550, with its twin-turbo V8, was undeniably potent, delivering a substantial 440 lb-ft of torque from a mere 1600 rpm. The 2014 Mercedes-Benz E350, however, takes a different approach. It forgoes forced induction, opting for a naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6 engine. While it might not offer the same outright muscle as the E550, the E350’s powertrain is far from disappointing. The 7-speed automatic transmission, although perhaps not the quickest-shifting in its class, perfectly complements the E-Class’s relaxed and refined character. The V6 still provides ample power and torque for everyday driving and spirited acceleration when needed, accompanied by a pleasing intake sound under heavier throttle.

In a market increasingly saturated with vehicles chasing an overtly sporty persona, the 2014 Mercedes-Benz E350 is refreshingly different. Even with the optional Sport package equipped on the test car, the enhancements remained tasteful and functional – 18-inch AMG wheels, drilled pedals, and supportive multi-contour seats. Crucially, it avoided the pitfalls of overly firm suspension or artificially heavy steering. This E350 is all the better for it. It delivers a composed and precise driving experience while maintaining the essential isolation and comfort expected of a luxury car. The cabin remains remarkably quiet with the top raised, defying typical fabric-roof convertible standards. Lowering the top reveals a pleasant open-air experience, remarkably free of excessive wind buffeting. The ride quality is comfortable, and the chassis exhibits impressive rigidity, with minimal cowl shake or rattles even on less-than-perfect road surfaces.

This sense of refined solitude extends into the cabin of the 2014 Mercedes-Benz E350. While it may not boast the cutting-edge, often complex, technology found in ultra-high-end convertibles, the build quality and material selection are undeniably on par with significantly more expensive rivals. When compared to competitors like a fully optioned BMW 4-Series convertible, which can easily exceed $70,000, the larger E-Class Cabriolet presents a compelling case for value. Mercedes-Benz’s COMAND infotainment system remains a personal favorite within the luxury segment, praised for its clear graphics and intuitive operation. It avoids overwhelming users with convoluted sub-menus, instead presenting major functions across a logical horizontal screen layout. While some may take issue with the column-mounted gear selector, it feels perfectly suited to the E350 Cabriolet’s relaxed demeanor. Steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters are still available for those moments when manual gear changes are desired. The rest of the interior exudes quality materials and a well-executed design, fully justifying the test car’s as-tested price of just under $75,000. For buyers seeking a genuinely comfortable and unpretentious luxury convertible, and who prioritize refinement over forced sportiness, the 2014 Mercedes-Benz E350 remains an excellent choice, especially in the pre-owned market.
