Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks is enhancing its esteemed Zetros series by introducing a protected driver’s cab directly from the factory. This upgrade, initially available for the three-axle, all-wheel-drive Zetros 6×6 truck benz model, marks a significant advancement in the vehicle’s capabilities. A Zetros 6×6 featuring this new protected cab will be publicly showcased at the Eurosatory trade fair in Paris from June 17th to 21st, 2024. Plans are in place to extend this protected cab option to other Zetros variants, ranging from the two-axle 4×4 to the robust four-axle 8×8, with production slated to begin at the Wörth truck plant in 2025.
Single-Source Armored Off-Road Solutions
The newly integrated protected driver’s cab is engineered to safeguard the vehicle’s occupants against threats such as bullets, mines, and improvised explosive devices, all while maintaining the exceptional off-road performance that the Zetros is known for. Previously, the armoring of driver’s cabs for Zetros trucks was typically handled by third-party partners post-production. Now, Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks is taking on this crucial integration in-house for specific projects involving the 2nd generation Zetros. This development is a result of a strategic partnership with Rheinmetall, who serves as the development partner and supplier for these advanced protected cabs.
By managing the entire process, from initial development and rigorous testing to final production and sales, Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks ensures comprehensive vehicle solutions, including protection, from a single, reliable source. As a specialized division within Daimler Truck, a leading truck manufacturer, Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks guarantees high reliability, substantial production capacity, and sustained, long-term service and spare parts availability. Depending on specific project requirements, Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks may also collaborate with established bodybuilder partners and OEMs for protected vehicle variants.
Expanding Protected Cab Availability Across the Zetros Range
Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks is committed to offering protected cab options across the entire Zetros product line, from the 4×4 to the 8×8 models. The Zetros’s distinctive cab-behind-engine design offers a structural advantage for integrating protected cabs. Positioning the cab behind the front axle strategically distributes the cab’s weight, preventing excessive load on the front axle, especially when navigating challenging terrains. This balanced weight distribution is crucial for maintaining optimal off-road handling and durability, even with the added weight of substantial armoring.
The development of the Zetros protected cab prioritized not only maximum safety but also ergonomics and excellent visibility. The cab is designed to comfortably accommodate up to three individuals on air-sprung seats equipped with four-point seat belts. A large, single-piece windshield provides a wide field of view, enhancing situational awareness. Furthermore, the cab incorporates versatile attachment points for integrating additional equipment. To streamline maintenance and improve parts availability, the protected cab design utilizes as many identical components as possible with the unprotected version, ensuring greater interchangeability within mixed fleets.
Zetros: The Ultimate Off-Road Truck for Heavy-Duty Tasks
The cab-behind-engine configuration of all Zetros models contributes to a remarkably quiet and comfortable driving experience, even in demanding off-road conditions. This design effectively protects both the crew and cargo. The hood, which can be opened independently of the cab, provides straightforward access to the engine compartment for servicing and repairs. This feature is a significant advantage over conventional trucks, as it eliminates the need to tilt the entire cab forward for engine access, thus maintaining the cab as a secure, protected space during maintenance.
All Zetros variants are powered by the robust OM 460 in-line six-cylinder diesel engine, delivering up to 375 kW / 510 hp and a maximum torque of 2,300 Nm from its 12.8-liter displacement. Equipped with a 16-speed gearbox or an Allison automatic torque converter, a two-stage transfer case, selectable differential locks, and optimized slope and ramp angles, the Zetros ensures exceptional traction and propulsion across diverse terrains. Its impressive fording capability allows it to confidently navigate through mud, rivers, and steep inclines. The permissible gross vehicle weight ranges from 16.5 to 40 tons, and as a tractor unit, it can handle a gross combination weight of up to 120 tons, making the Zetros highly versatile for a wide array of heavy-duty transport applications.
At Eurosatory, the showcased Zetros with a protected cab is fitted with a self-sealing tank from Lindner & Fischer, developed in collaboration with WEW Westerwälder Eisenwerk GmbH. This innovative tank technology reacts to leaks by sealing damaged areas, enhancing operational safety. The tank body is mounted on an interchangeable frame with twistlock fasteners, enabling rapid mounting and dismounting within minutes. Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks will also present additional models at Eurosatory, including an Arocs 6×6 with a double winch, a Unimog U 5000, and the FGA chassis, demonstrating their comprehensive range of specialized vehicles.
