The Mercedes-Benz E-Class of the W212 generation is a vehicle I know well, having experienced it in various forms, from the practical sedan to the stylish coupe and the breezy cabriolet, since its introduction in 2009. As a new generation approaches, this review serves as a tribute to one of Mercedes-Benz’s most accomplished models. The 2015 Mercedes-Benz E400 Cabriolet stands as a testament to the brand’s core values, offering a harmonious blend of size, luxury, and performance.
Often considered the quintessential Mercedes, the E-Class strikes a perfect balance compared to its siblings, the C-Class and S-Class. Its dimensions are ideal, providing an interior that is both comfortable and spacious without being overly large externally. The engine options are diverse, ranging from efficient diesels to powerful V8s, and it boasts a variety of body styles, including the increasingly rare station wagon. Moreover, the E-Class, particularly models like a well-equipped E350 sedan, presents a compelling value proposition, often priced competitively with top-tier 3-Series models.
While the E-Class sedan embodies practicality and sensibility, the cabriolet version leans towards passion and emotional appeal. Although it comfortably seats four adults and maintains a refined ride, hinting at practicality, the E400 Cabriolet is undeniably a luxury indulgence. Its smaller trunk space and premium price point reinforce its position as a vehicle driven by desire rather than pure necessity. However, for those seeking a convertible that can serve as more than just a weekend toy, the 2015 Mercedes-Benz E400 Cabriolet makes a surprisingly strong case as a primary vehicle.
The comfort level is exceptional. The ride quality is remarkably smooth, effectively absorbing road imperfections with minimal disruption. While some minor chassis flex (scuttle shake) is perceptible on rougher roads, it’s far from intrusive. The dashboard, though familiar in its design, exudes quality with its robust construction and intuitive layout. The multi-adjustable front seats, equipped with heating and cooling functions, are truly outstanding, offering features like neck-warming air vents, seat heating and cooling, and comprehensive lumbar support to ensure comfort even on long journeys. Furthermore, driving with the top down remains pleasant, with minimal wind turbulence disrupting the cabin environment.
These attributes are consistent with the E350 Cabriolet previously reviewed. The key differentiator in the 2015 Mercedes-Benz E400 Cabriolet lies in its enhanced powertrain. Despite a slightly smaller displacement compared to the E350 (3.0 liters vs 3.5 liters), the E400 gains significant performance through the addition of twin turbochargers. This results in a boost of 27 horsepower and a substantial 81 lb-ft of torque, improvements that are readily apparent in everyday driving. Surprisingly, efficiency also sees an uptick, with the E400 achieving 3 MPG better fuel economy than its predecessor in similar testing conditions.
In real-world driving, the 2015 E400 Cabriolet delivers a sensation of effortless speed rather than outright blistering acceleration. However, it possesses ample power to confidently keep pace with sporty rivals like the BMW 335is and Infiniti G37. The familiar 7-speed automatic transmission, the sole transmission option as is typical for Mercedes-Benz, performs seamlessly and unobtrusively. While paddle shifters are present, they feel somewhat superfluous in this vehicle, as the E400 Cabriolet is best enjoyed with a relaxed and smooth driving style, allowing its inherent refinement to shine.
As the next generation E-Class approaches, it will undoubtedly bring advancements in power, efficiency, size, and safety. Yet, it’s questionable whether it will capture the essence of “Benz-like” character more effectively than the current model. With a tested price nearing $75,000, the 2015 Mercedes-Benz E400 Cabriolet is not an inexpensive car. However, it’s challenging to find another vehicle that embodies the classic Mercedes-Benz values of luxury, comfort, and understated performance quite as comprehensively as this convertible. The upcoming model certainly has a high benchmark to surpass.
