Reviving a Classic Roadster: Detailing a 2006 Mercedes-Benz SL 500

The Mercedes-Benz SL 500, especially the 2006 model, represents a blend of luxury and performance that has cemented its place in automotive history. This Aegean Blue Metallic roadster, boasting a robust 302 horsepower and 339 ft/lb of torque engine, further enhanced with the AMG Sport Package, is undeniably a stunning vehicle. Stepping into the driver’s seat, you immediately understand the feeling of everything being “just right”—a testament to Mercedes-Benz’s engineering and design prowess.

This particular 2006 Mercedes Benz Sl 500, despite its low mileage of only 7,000 miles, had spent considerable time in the garage and was in need of a comprehensive detailing to restore its showroom shine. Upon inspection, it was clear that while the paintwork was free of swirl marks, it suffered from a noticeable accumulation of scratches and stubborn water spots, particularly on the horizontal surfaces. Furthermore, the exterior was coated in a layer of general grime, with heavy brake dust buildup on the wheels.

Recognizing that this detailing project wouldn’t yield the dramatic paint correction “before and after” shots typically associated with heavily swirled vehicles, the focus shifted towards meticulous documentation of often-overlooked areas. The aim was to create an educational guide, highlighting the nuances of car care for enthusiasts looking to maintain their own vehicles to a high standard. This detailed approach ensures every aspect of the vehicle, from the interior to the exterior, receives the attention it deserves.

The detailing process began with the interior.

The cabin of this 2006 Mercedes Benz SL 500 was found to be in relatively good condition and generally clean. The strategy for the dark interior was to perform a thorough cleaning followed by the application of protective layers to all surfaces. After vacuuming the carpets and floor mats, a solution of Woolite and water was prepared to clean all surfaces using microfiber towels. Experience dictates that even seemingly clean convertible interiors, especially those with dark upholstery, can harbor significant amounts of dirt and contaminants. This proved to be the case here.

Following the initial surface cleaning, attention was directed to the often-neglected cracks and crevices to remove any accumulated debris.

A notable feature, the engine start/stop button positioned atop the shift knob, adds a touch of modern convenience to this classic roadster.

Even the air vents received meticulous cleaning to ensure no detail was missed.

The driver’s seat, a common area for wear, particularly the left side, showed signs of dirt and dye transfer from denim, despite the car’s low mileage.

To address this, an all-purpose cleaner (APC) diluted to a 10:1 ratio was used, gently agitated with a dedicated leather brush.

Following cleaning, all leather surfaces in the interior were treated with Optimum Protectant Plus. This UV protectant is favored for its non-greasy, non-shiny finish, which restores the leather to a like-new appearance without appearing artificially “dressed.”

Door shuts, often overlooked, had accumulated their share of dirt, dust, and grime.

These areas were cleaned using Optimum No Rinse diluted as a quick detailer (QD ratio) in a spray bottle.

Finally, the pedals, subject to constant contact with dirty shoes, were addressed. An APC and a brush were used, followed by a wipe down with a damp cloth to remove any residue. Care was taken to avoid using products that could leave a greasy or slippery finish, ensuring driver safety.

With the interior meticulously cleaned, the focus shifted to the exterior of the 2006 Mercedes Benz SL 500. Several areas of the car offered good “before and after” photographic opportunities, and the process documentation will now transition to the exterior detailing stages.

Initial inspection of the exterior confirmed the vehicle was in dire need of a thorough cleaning.

The wheel wells were particularly dirty and difficult to access.

One advantageous feature of the SL 500 is its height-adjustable suspension, offering three settings. This feature is particularly useful for navigating steep inclines without scraping the undercarriage. For detailing, raising the suspension to its maximum height provided improved access to the wheel wells and side skirts during polishing.

As is customary, wheel cleaning was the first step in the exterior detailing process. The wheels of this 2006 Mercedes Benz SL 500 presented a significant challenge due to heavy brake dust accumulation.

P21S wheel gel was applied to the rims and calipers, one side of the vehicle at a time, and allowed to dwell. Simultaneously, P21S Total Auto Wash (TAW) was sprayed onto the tires and wheel wells.

Each wheel and wheel well required approximately 10-12 minutes of cleaning due to the extensive buildup of dirt and brake dust. Brushes were used to effectively clean inside the wheel well areas.

Following rinsing, water beading was observed, indicating the presence of existing wax or sealants. These needed to be removed to prevent interference with the subsequent polishing process. Chemical Guys Wash & Clear, at a paint prep ratio of 2oz/gal, was used to aid in stripping these products. A Gilmour foam gun was used to initially soak the car, followed by a two-bucket wash system, with one bucket containing CGWC. Due to the significant contamination, the wash mitt was thoroughly rinsed in the rinse bucket using a Grit Guard after each section to avoid reintroducing dirt onto the paint.

After washing, the 2006 Mercedes Benz SL 500 was clayed using Optimum Instant Detailer as a lubricant. A high-quality lubricant is crucial during claying to prevent marring the paint surface. Heavy contamination was found on both horizontal and vertical surfaces, necessitating thorough claying to achieve a smooth surface ready for polishing.

To ensure the surface was completely clean and prepared for polishing after claying, a second foam wash was performed.

Despite being swirl-free, the paintwork exhibited numerous random scratches and water spot etching, especially on horizontal panels. Menzerna PO203 was selected for a one-step polishing process, favored for its versatility. When paired with the appropriate pad, PO203 offers effective defect correction and leaves a finish ready for a last step product (LSP). However, multiple IPA wipedowns are recommended afterward to ensure no fillers or masking agents are present. Testing confirmed PO203 as the optimal choice for this 2006 Mercedes Benz SL 500.

Undersides of side skirts, often missed, were also meticulously polished using a 4” white spot buff pad for tight areas. An exercise mat was used for comfort while working in these lower areas.

The glass roof, heavily water-spotted, was polished using a PC with a white polishing pad and Optimum Poli-Seal. This combination provided sufficient cut for defect removal while leaving a slick, protected finish expected to last for months.

The Aegean Blue Metallic paint presented an intriguing color shift, appearing sometimes grey, sometimes light blue. A macro shot reveals the metallic flake detail.

Following polishing, an IPA wipedown was performed, followed by an Optimum Instant Detailer wipedown, preparing the finish for sealant application. Optimum Opti-seal, chosen for its ease of application and non-plastic appearance, was applied using a red applicator pad. After curing, it was buffed out with a soft MF towel and a light spritz of Optimum Instant Detailer. Opti-seal’s durability, proven through a harsh Midwest winter, makes it a reliable protection product.

After sealing, P21S 100% wax was applied by hand with a separate red applicator pad. While not the most durable wax, P21S 100% provides a superior finish, easy application and removal, and requires minimal cure time.

An often-neglected area, the underside of the trunk lid above the license plate, was addressed. It had accumulated approximately three years of grime.

The result after cleaning is a stark contrast.

Even the emblems showed significant contamination beyond simple surface dirt.

Emblems were polished using a PC with a white pad and 106FA polish. All-in-one products like Optimum Poli-Seal or Klasse AIO are also effective for emblem polishing.

Before detailing, the Mercedes badge showed signs of neglect.

Exhaust tips were heavily tarnished. They were first cleaned with P21S TAW and 0000 steel wool, then polished to a mirror finish.
